A bid to raise money for a non-profit organisation in Wales was recently staged and fancy dress was the theme.

Supporters of Friends of Barry Beaches (FoBB) gathered to hold the event and attendees donned their fancy dress outfits for the occasion, the Barry and District News reports.

The gathering was staged at the home of councillor Rob Curtis, who founded the group. He suggested that those present for the festivities enjoyed themselves.

He said: “Everyone had a good night out and we also raised funds to help protect our marine environment at the same time.”

Meanwhile, commenting on the efforts of FoBB, he added: “The work our volunteers carry out is vital as our seas and beaches are increasingly becoming overwhelmed with plastic litter and fishing line, which not only looks horrible, but kills and injures many of our fantastic marine animals every year.”

He went on to thank all those who wore fancy dress and donated money to aid the organisation’s cause.

According to councillor Curtis, the evening was a success.

FoBB encouraged people to attend the event in fancy dress outfits and donate money to help it continue its monthly beach cleans around Barry.

Councillor Curtis was named Green Champion in local paper the Echo’s Community Champion Awards and he said the group has three main objectives.

Firstly it helps to protect the marine environment of Barry’s five main beaches. Secondly, it recycles as much of the litter as possible and, thirdly, it aims to promote the sustainable use of beaches by the public.

He stated that the people living in Barry are proud of their “beautiful beaches”.

He also pointed out that litter can kill wildlife, it looks unsightly and it is a hazard to human health.

According to the group leader, surveys show there are two pieces of litter for every footstep people take on beaches.
